Pre-Care & Post-Care Instructions
for Laser Hair Removal
Pre-Care Instructions
Proper preparation before your hair removal laser treatment ensures optimal results and minimizes risks.
Consultation and Medical Clearance:
-
Inform your provider about any medical conditions, medications, allergies, or recent illnesses.
-
Disclose any recent sun exposure, tanning, or use of self-tanning products.
-
Discuss your hair removal goals and medical history with your provider to tailor the treatment.
Skin Preparation:
-
Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanning products for at least 4 weeks before the treatment.
-
Discontinue any retinoids (e.g., tretinoin), exfoliating acids (e.g., glycolic acid), for 5-7 days before the treatment and other photosensitizing agents for 7-10 days before the treatment.
-
Do not use harsh scrubs, light chemical peels, or waxing in the treatment area for 1 week before the procedure. For medium chemical peels, wait 4 weeks before the procedure.
-
Shave the treatment area 24-48 hours before the procedure to avoid irritation during the treatment.
-
Do not wax, pluck, or bleach the treatment area for 4-6 weeks prior to your treatment, as this can interfere with the laser's ability to target the hair follicle.
Medications:
-
If prescribed, begin antiviral prophylaxis to prevent cold sore outbreaks (especially for facial treatments) 1-2 days before the procedure.
-
If you are on any medications that increase sensitivity to light, inform your provider, as this may affect your treatment plan.
On the Day of the Procedure:
-
Arrive with clean, makeup-free skin. Avoid applying any lotions, perfumes, or deodorants to the treatment area.
-
Wear loose-fitting clothing if the treatment area is on your body.
-
Avoid shaving the day of treatment (unless advised by your provider)
Post-Care Instructions
After the hair removal treatment, your skin may be sensitive and require proper care to ensure optimal healing and results.
Immediately After Treatment:
-
Redness, swelling, itching and a sunburn-like sensation are normal and may last for a few days.
-
Use a cold compress or ice packs wrapped in a clean cloth for 10-15 minutes at a time to reduce discomfort and swelling, if needed.
-
Use aloe vera gel or hydrocortisone creams to reduce redness, discomfort and swelling, if needed.
Hair Shedding:
-
Hair Loss: Expect to see hair shedding from the treated area over the next 1-2 weeks. This is normal as the treated follicles are expelled from the skin.
-
Exfoliation: Clients are encouraged to lightly exfoliate 48-72 hours after treatment to help reduce the chances of ingrown hairs.
-
Avoid Pulling: Do not pick, scratch or pull at the shedding hairs to avoid irritation or scarring.
Sun Protection:
-
Avoid sun exposure and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) post-treatment. Reapply as needed throughout the day.
-
Consistently use sun protection throughout the duration of your treatments.
-
Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses when outdoors.
Activity Restrictions:
-
Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and swimming pools for 48-72 hours post-treatment.
-
Do not use retinoids, exfoliating products, or harsh cleansers until your provider gives clearance (typically 5-7 days).
Follow-Up Treatments:
-
Depending on your treatment plan, multiple sessions (typically 4-8 weeks apart) may be required for optimal results. Schedule follow-up appointments as recommended by your provider.
Monitor for Complications:
-
Contact your provider if you experience:
-
Persistent redness, swelling, or discomfort beyond a few days.
-
Signs of infection, such as pus, increased warmth, or fever.
-
Unusual pigmentation changes in the treated area.
-
Notes:
-
Healing timelines and results vary based on individual skin type, hair colour and treatment intensity.
-
It is common for hair growth to decrease significantly after several treatments, though some individuals may require ongoing maintenance sessions.
-
Always adhere to the instructions provided by your treatment provider, as they may customize these guidelines based on your specific skin type and treatment goals.
